Rascioni & Cecconello Poggio Ciliegio Maremma Toscana Igt 2001 750ml

Rascioni & Cecconello Ciliegiolo

From ciliegiolo grapes, an indigenous Tuscan variety, this wine is aged in French oak barriques for 6-8 months.RatingThis small house just outside of the Morellino di Scansano appellation is responsible for rediscovering the Ciliegiolo grape, a minor variety once considered suitable only for quaffing wines. Their consulting winemaker, Attilio Pagli, by bleeding the tanks, found a way of giving body and concentration to the wines, as is immediately evident in the 2001 Poggio Ciliegio, bursting with sweet raspberry and red currant fruit, spicy and toasty from the oak, and with an important volume, roundness, and a luscious texture on the palate. Along with the 1990 and 1994, it is the best the house has yet made and easily good for another dozen years of drinking.
