Familiar notes of mint, cedar, leather, cocoa and violets hint at the complexity of this wine. As is often the case, the Red Wine does not reveal all of its charms at once. This wine has sophistication, restraint, and complexity. French oak is detectable, adding structure and elements of toast and spice to the palate, which is still developing volume and fruit depth. Andrew Will Blend – Bordeaux

This precocious vineyard is finally showing strength and a youthful complexity. It has an assertive nose, exuberant body, and the clean finish you have come to expect from this region. The wine has much Cabernet Franc in it yet seems to have a herbal and mineral side to it. With all the patience of a saint, Chris Hoon the vineyard manager, has delivered truly complex and well ripened fruit. For that we can’t thank him enough. We continue to work row by row with this area and we are hopeful that in a few years the growing reputation which this much maligned part of Washington has had in the past will morph into a truly compelling area for growing Merlot, Cabernet France Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Petite Verdot. The wine has a luscious and simply delicious appeal. We like the softness of it as well as the currant and plum flavors. Rated 93. The 2006 Ciel du Cheval Vineyard is a blend of 40% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Franc, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4% Petit Verdot. Purple-colored, it has an outstanding bouquet of cedar, cinnamon, clove, black currant, and blackberry. On the palate the tannins so predominant in Red Mountain are nicely tamed. There are layers of savory fruit, considerable complexity, excellent balance, and a lengthy, fruit-filled finish.
